HS2 tunnelling updates

We expect Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Sushila to complete her tunnelling journey from West Ruislip to the Green Park Way Vent Shaft on 13 December. This milestone marks the completion of part of the tunnel construction of the new HS2 line linking Euston to Birmingham. We expect TBM Caroline to reach the Green Park Way site in March 2025.

Removal of the conveyor structure – 2 January to July 2025

We will begin dismantling and removing the conveyor structures by crane from within the West Ruislip Portal entrance from 2 January until July 2025.

From 2 January to 2 February 2025 we will work 24 hours, seven days a week. To avoid overnight disturbance, we will carry out metal cutting and concrete breaking works from 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturdays and 10am to 4pm on Sundays. We will place acoustic blankets fixed to Heras fencing around the concrete breaking area to reduce the noise.

We do not expect any additional noise because the conveyor, support operations and machinery movements carried out to run TBM Sushila’s downline tunnelling operations will have stopped. When TBM Caroline completes tunnelling, we will repeat the removal of the conveyor structures which have been supporting the upline tunnelling operations. We will update you regularly as the works progress from now until July 2025.

Construction will continue over the Christmas period on the cross passage at our ventilation shaft in Northolt, which will be supported by vehicle movements at the West Ruislip Portal

Concrete cutting and removal works within the tunnel – 27 to 31 December 2024

While TBM Caroline stops tunnelling over the Christmas break, we will remove the temporary concrete tunnel floor inside the entrance, install drainage and then replace with the permanent concrete tunnel floor.

These works will take place on 27, 28, 30 and 31 December between 8am and 6pm, and on 29 December between 10am to 5pm.

We would like to apologise in advance for any disruption or inconvenience this may cause. Every effort is being taken to ensure that these works are carried out in the least impactful way.

From 23/05 to 08/11 HS2/SCS carried out the River Pinn Realignment works which are now complete. The scope of works included:
•    The installation of a Dam and over pumping system to create a dry working environment for the Realignment of a section of the River Pinn
•    The formation of a new channel along the consented route for the River Realignment.
•    The construction of a new Footpath along the Realigned River course and installation of permanent drainage outlets
There will also be the installation of the new Footbridge structure over the new River channel to connect the U45, U46 and U47 Public Rights of Way but that will now not happen until 2025.

•  Updated SCS Noise Barrier Testing near Breakspear Road South – June 2024 to Mar 2025
There will be Noise Barrier testing from late June until at least March 2025 for up to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week within the HS2/SCS Site to the west of the entrance off Breakspear Road South. Noise Barrier Testing commenced on 27/06 with the Generator and Actuator Instrument being used 24/7 to test the piles and the ground around them in the 1st Phase of testing.
A temporary embankment has been constructed in the area where Noise Barriers have been installed and the structural integrity will be tested. The scope of the testing is to confirm that the pile foundation and the structure will not have any significant changes due to Trains passing the Noise Barrier. The anticipated level of noise impact is expected to be minimal and will include the use of a generator which will power the instrument that will simulate the movement of the trains passing (the generator will be covered in acoustic barriers to minimise the noise).
HS2/SCS are gearing up to commence the next Phase of testing, MFD (main fatigue and dynamic test) testing of the Noise Barrier Panels which is expected to commence in early 2025. A test setup of the Noise Barriers will be constructed like the image below. The panels will be fixed to the piles and secured by the torsion beam (which have already been tested) and continuous shaking of the panels will be undertaken with a setup matching that of figure 2 below.  Upon completion of the MFD testing of the piles, HS2/SCS will commence the Acoustic testing of the Noise Barrier Panels, the test acoustic barriers will be fitted with Acoustic Absorbers and rubber gap filler, Acoustic Steps, and this will be undertaken in March 2025.

Working Hours at Breakspear Rd South Site for Construction of Retained Embankments – June to Dec 2024

From 17/06 to 31/12 HS2/SCS will be constructing the 3 Retained Embankments which connect West Ruislip Portal to the Copthall Tunnel.
At present, the extended hours consent has been removed by LBH which means this activity is only being carried out during Core Working Hours (Mon to Fri 8am to 6pm & Sat 8am to 1pm).
During the construction of the Embankments (that are either side of the River Pinn & Breakspear Rd South HS2 Bridges as shown on the Map below) there is expected to be 10,000 lorry loads of material brought into the Sites from Harvil Rd Gate 2 and across the Internal Haul Roads. Lorries that are unloading on the west side of Breakspear Rd South will exit onto Breakspear Rd South on the HS2 Approved Lorry Route, and lorries unloading on the east side of Breakspear Rd South will continue on the Internal Haul Road to exit at West Ruislip on that HS2 Approved Lorry Route.
HS2/SCS will be building the Embankments to the required height using machinery for delivery and placement of material and the compaction of placed material will be carried out using vibratory rollers.

LBH will be keeping close tabs on the lorry movements during these works.

·  Ongoing Breakspear Road South junction Fine Bush Lane 3-Way Traffic Lights (Mon 28/10 to Sat 02/11 – Daytime only 8am to 6pm)
·  Updated River Pinn Realignment and Footpath & Footbridge Construction – new completion date of 15/11(requested)
From 23/05 to 02/11 HS2/SCS will be carrying out the River Pinn Realignment works. This will involve installing a new Footbridge which will reconnect the U45, U47 and U46 Public Rights of Way and create a new footpath to replace the existing U47.
The scope of works includes:
The installation of a Dam and over pumping system to create a dry working environment for the Realignment of a section of the River Pinn
The formation of a new channel along the consented route for the River Realignment. This will include all the necessary aquatic features and measures being taken to preserve existing wildlife in the River
The construction of a new Footpath along the Realigned River course and installation of permanent drainage outlets
The installation of the new Footbridge structure over the new River channel to connect the U45, U46 and U47 Public Rights of Way will now not happen during these works but will be done at a later date.
Update 30/10 – with the heavy rainfall that has been on and off over the past couple of months there have been lots of delays to these works caused by having to remove the Dam and Overpumping on several occasions due to the increased rainfall. There is currently a Consent in place with the Environment Agency (EA) for these works until early November but HS2/SCS think it will take a further couple of weeks to complete the works and will be requesting a further extension from the EA until the 15/11.
·  Updated SCS Noise Barrier Testing near Breakspear Road South – June to ? (extended beyond October 2024)
There will be Noise Barrier testing from late June to the end of October for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week within the HS2/SCS Site to the west of the entrance off Breakspear Road South (please note this was originally scheduled to start on 28/05).
The Trains using the HS2 Railway will not likely stop at night so the 24/7 testing is critical to simulate actual stress and strain on the Noise Barrier similar to the operational requirements and in reducing the duration of the test. This is fundamental to assuring Noise Barrier compliance.
Update 30/10 – LBH are seeking clarification from HS2/SCS of when the Noise Barrier Testing will be extended until and will update us/you once confirmed.
Southern Sustainable Placement Area (SSPA) – Updated Works Programme
HS2/SCS have now confirmed the Works Programme going forward on the SSPA Site (located between Harvil Road and Breakspear Rd South).  The next stages are landscaping of the Mounds which will involve the use of excavators, dozers and tractors but should be much quieter than when placing the material and the Vibration Rolling that was required to do that. The landscaping on the SSPA is programmed to be completed by summer 2025 at present. All works on the Mounds at present are Core Working Hours Only (Mon to Fri 8am to 6pm & Sat 8am to 1pm) until further notice.
