Some topical scams: watch out!

SCAMS: WHAT TO BE AWARE OF
Buckinghamshire Councils Trading Standards office and Thames Valley Police have made us aware of several scams and areas of concern. Here are just a few things for us all to be aware of and share with our volunteers and clients:
• Offers of Coronavirus ‘home testing kits’ > there are no such tests available
• Claims that the Council needs to enter your home to do a ‘deep clean’ > simply not true
• Offers of refunds on taxes etc re COVID-19 are just a scam to get your bank details
• Offers of investment opportunities to take advantage of the COVID-19 financial downturn
• Fake products offering protection against COVID-19 > the best protection is to STAY AT HOME
• Mobile phone apps claiming to give updates on the virus > they block your phone and then demand a payment to release it
• Beware of people offering to do your shopping and taking money then not returning
• Do not give cash, bank details or PIN numbers to anyone you do not know
• Banks and the Police will NEVER ask for your account details over the phone
• Be sceptical > if you are unsure about a new contact by phone, email or at the door just hang up, delete, or shut the door.
If you have real concerns call the police on 101 (999 in emergencies only) or speak to Trading Standards on 01296 388788.

At last… somewhere you can forward scam emails. A reminder from last week. Send them to report@phishing.gov.uk, and the National Cyber Security Centre (part of GCHQ) analyses them and
can remove the culprit sites. Pls spread the word. From Thames Valley Police- Nottinghamshire Knockers
Please warn your neighbours, particularly elderly or vulnerable neighbours, not to open the door to strangers to buy on the doorstep. Some doorstep callers may offer poor quality goods at inflated prices and if a caller is not genuine, they may be gathering information for future crime. Please keep in mind that if cold callers do not get any sales in your area, they are less likely to return.
How they work
The sellers may say that they are on a “rehabilitation course” arranged by probation services or other organisations trying to find people work. This is not the case and often they are known criminals. Probation services do not run such schemes.
They may show a card which claims to be a “Pedlars Licence” or work permit. This is not valid, and they are breaking the law if they are using anything like this.
They may also hand over a card saying they are deaf or dumb.
According to the police, the bag of household products is supplied by someone who employs them (originally a man from Nottingham – hence the name), but now they are recruited from anywhere.
The lads are supplied with a full bag of household products (including the typical tea-towels!) and charged a minimal sum for the contents– it used to be £35. They can keep whatever they make, above this amount.
Usually they are deposited in an area from a transit van and given a list of streets to work. An hour or so later they are picked up and dropped off in another location. They often work from 9am to 9pm.
They will knock on a door, offering cleaning items which they know are cheap and of extremely poor quality; the householder also knows they are rubbish but that is part of the scam. Many people will purchase items and pay them something, just to get rid of them. There have been cases of elderly
residents handing over large sums as these lads can be very persistent and confrontational.
The price for whatever has been purchased usually comes to a note – usually £10. The householder disappears to get this – this is when the scam begins, according to the police. When the note is handed over, the lad examines the condition and how long it took the person to get it. If it is crumpled, they accept it and move on. If it is crisp flat and new – they are much more interested and may engage the person in more conversation, to obtain details about them. As they leave, they will smell the note. If it is slightly musty – this is an indication that there is more in the property. Those addresses are noted. The addresses of elderly/vulnerable/gullible people are all noted.
These are handed to the employer and there is a small amount of cash handed over for each one.
These addresses are then sold on. If there is a later break-in, the employer expects a further cut of the proceeds. These lists are purchased by all sorts of people including – tarmacers, tree workers, roofers, dodgy builders etc., and can be shared quite easily. Once on a list, your address could be
sold on and on. Hence the repeat nature of these persistent callers.
If they are in your area, please call the police immediately on 101 with a description of them & any associated vehicle they may be using.
Stay Alert and Stay Safe!

HS2 Works Update: New works and works restarting in Hillingdon

Posted on Apr 27th 2020 by HS2 in Hillingdon

We are working closely with our construction partners to review the works on all our construction sites in line with Government and Public Health England (PHE) advice on dealing with Covid-19. The Government’s current Covid-19 strategy makes clear that construction activity can continue as long as it complies with this guidance, which you can see by clicking here.

The below works are going ahead as our contractors are confident that they can operate in line with PHE and industry guidance, protecting our staff and the communities in which they are working.

Work on A412 and Moorhall Road

HS2 will be restarting a range of works just outside the London Borough of Hillingdon, including a temporary off-peak lane closure on the A412, near the Denham Water-Ski Club entrance. This is to allow for site set-up, archaeological and ecological works to take place including around Broadwater Lake. We will also be undertaking some work along Moorhall Road.

Dews Lane and Harvil Road area

Works have restarted at the compound to the west of Harvil Road and South of Dews Lane.

HS2 Land from Ruislip Golf Course to Breakspear Road South and Harvil Road

The U42 Bridleway diversion at Breakspear Road South is now open for public use.

Overnight works on the Chiltern lines in South Ruislip

We will be placing some monitoring equipment along the Chiltern Line and Central Line railways to ensure our construction does not impact on the lines. As all the equipment is self-powered there will be no need for any wires or cables to be placed in the area.

Works will comply with all safety rules with regard to working within the rail and tube environment. This being the case the work will take place from 00:01 to 08:00 in the early morning of Sunday 3 May. We will only use hand tools to reduce any noise impact.

HS2 Updates galore

HS2 Works Notification: Gas Main Diversion off Harvil Road and other works starting this week

Posted on Apr 14th 2020 by HS2 in Hillingdon

We are continuing to work closely with our construction partners to review the works on our construction sites in line with Government and Public Health England (PHE) advice on dealing with COVID-19. The Government’s current COVID-19 strategy makes clear that construction activity should continue as long as it complies with this guidance.

The below works are going ahead as our contractors are confident that they can operate in line with PHE and industry guidance, protecting our staff and the communities in which they are working.

Gas Main Diversion off Harvil Road

Following a winter shutdown period, Cadent is returning to its former compound off Harvil Road to complete work on the gas main diversion that it started last year. Works start this week and we expect work to be completed by June 2020. You can read more in this notification here.

Ruislip Golf Course

Delivery of aggregate to site will start from Wednesday 15 April, during usual working hours (8am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 1pm on Saturdays)

Land from Ruislip Golf Course to Breakspear Road South and Harvil Road

Surveys of land within HS2 sites and site hoarding from Tuesday 14 April.

Dews Lane and Harvil Road area

We are maintaining a security presence at their sites on Dews Lane and Harvil Road area. To enable this to continue there will be occasional deliveries to the sites of fuel and sanitation equipment. Servicing of welfare facilities and emptying of cess tanks will also take place.

Update on Completion of Work at Ruislip Rugby Club

We wish to update you on the current position with regards to the fields at Ruislip Rugby Club. Whilst the investigatory works within the fields have finished, we faced particularly difficult conditions due to the amount of rain that fell throughout January and February, water-logging the soil.

While we used matting to protect the fields as much as we could, some ruts occurred due to the movement of the vehicles and indeed the removal of the matting itself. We had been waiting for the ground to dry out sufficiently so that we could flatten out the area to remove the ruts that were left, however due to COVID-19 we paused activities at this site.

We are continuing to work closely with our construction partners to review the works on our construction sites in line with Government and Public Health England (PHE) advice on dealing with COVID-19. The Government’s current COVID-19 strategy makes clear that construction activity should continue as long as it complies with this guidance.

Our contractor is keenly aware of the need to finish the work at the club and we do fully appreciate that at this time many families are using the fields as the venue for their daily exercise. Please be assured that as soon as we are able to do so safely, we will return to the club and return the fields to their former condition.

Waste collection, parking and other LBH Coronavirus stuff

Coronavirus links from Hillingdon Council

Advice page at: www.hillingdon.gov.uk/article/3745/Latest-advice-on-coronavirus

Links to all sorts of help pages including advice about household and garden waste and recycling and the introduction of free parking.

Here are some extracts:

Parkingwww.hillingdon.gov.uk/article/4465/Parking-charges-and-permits

To support our residents, we have decided to introduce a free emergency parking permit that residents can obtain during this period which allows them to park in the parking management scheme where they live. This is to reflect the higher than normal number of residents’ vehicles that are being parked on residential streets.

We have also removed charges and time limits from all council public car parks and pay and display bays to provide additional parking capacity for residents and key workers.

Rubbish and recycling www.hillingdon.gov.uk/coronavirus-rubbish-and-recycling

We are currently operating all services as normal; however, as we prioritise general waste and dry mixed recycling collections, your weekly garden waste service may be affected.

We will continue to collect your food waste on your normal collection day, even if we are unable to collect your garden waste.

If your garden waste is not collected, please leave your bags at the edge of your property and we will collect them as soon as possible.

There’s much more information on all three pages. Well worth a visit.
