LBH recycling advice

FROM LBH:
News Release
23 September 2025 Rescue your recycling this Recycle Week To mark Recycle Week 2025 (22 to 28 September), Hillingdon Council is encouraging residents to carefully check what they’re putting out for collection and discover how to reduce household waste at a recycling-themed event.

This year’s Recycle Week theme, ‘Rescue Me! Recycle!’ encourages people to recycle all they can by highlighting items regularly thrown away in general waste that can be recycled.

While most households in Hillingdon sort their recycle well, items that the council can’t recycle can sometimes still be found in clear, dry, mixed recycling sacks by collection crews. To help residents eliminate those, the council’s ‘Top of the Contaminants’ campaign highlights how items, like food and clothing, can be recycled through other services it offers.

To make it easier for residents to recycle household items, the council offers weekly rubbish and recycling collections, garden and food waste recycling, small electrical bins in libraries and doorstep textiles collections in partnership with the textiles charity, Traid. Harefield Civic Amenity Site also has dedicated bins for vapes and coffee pods.

By taking two seconds to carefully check what’s going into their clear sacks, residents can play their part and help ensure that what goes to the processing plant is of high quality.

Hands-on guidance for repairing clothes and small electrical items will be available to visitors to the council’s free Repair and Reuse Day at Botwell Green Leisure Centre in Hayes, on Saturday 27 September, from 11am to 2pm.

The council’s recycling team is hosting a Recycling Roadshow at the event where you can get useful hints, tips and advice for household recycling and sign up for services, including automatic bag deliveries and food waste collections.

By taking small steps to rescue recyclables and remove contaminants residents can make a big contribution to improving recycling in Hillingdon.

Cllr Eddie Lavery, Hillingdon Council’s Cabinet Member for Community and Environment, said: “It’s great that so many households in Hillingdon already do their best to sort and separate what they can. While for some items, like sanitary products, going in the waste bin is the only option, for most other items from small electricals to coffee pods and batteries, the council offers a recycling solution.

“Recycle Week’s campaign encourages not throwing away recyclable items. By also removing ‘top contaminants’ and properly disposing of non-recyclables, we can ensure we are collecting high quality recycling and reducing waste, which is better for the planet.”

Yes please Dry mixed recycling

In Hillingdon, you can recycle paper, cardboard, glass and plastics every week for free – and it all goes in the same clear (dry mixed) recycling bag.
Watch our ‘That’s not my recycling’ video, which encourages children to ask grown-ups to check they’re only putting items we can recycle in to their clear bags. It can also be used by schools and families to talk about recycling at school and home.
We’ve also created a ‘Top of the Pops’ style chart countdown, exposing the top 5 contaminating items most commonly found in residents’ dry mixed recycling bags. What can I recycle in my dry mixed recycling bags?

Upcoming HS2 road and footpath works

1            Harvil Road Resurfacing – Full Road Closure – Mon 11/08 to Fri 29/08
The long awaited LBH resurfacing of Harvil Road between the junction with Swakeleys Road and HS2 Gate 1 Site has now been confirmed to take place from Mon 11/08 until Fri 29/08
This will be a Full Road Closure in place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in order to get this large area of road completely resurfaced. LBH will also be undertaking essential preparatory works, including localised kerb repairs, ditch cleaning, and drainage improvements.
These works are now scheduled to be delivered across 19 days which will be a big reduction on the initially quoted 4 week Full Road Closure.  Resurfacing Works are scheduled to start at the Swakeleys Road end of the Road Closure and work towards HS2 Gate 1 Site as they progress Access to residents will be maintained for the properties on Harvil road, however the access and egress points will change as the resurfacing of the carriageway progresses Emergency Service Vehicles will be assisted when ‘Blue lighting’ through the works extents. If a situation arises whereas it is deemed unsafe to travel through the works Traffic Marshals will assist in ensuring the most direct appropriate route is set out. Variable Message Signs (VMS) will be installed w/c 28/07 in locations near to the works to pre-warn of the upcoming Road Closure dates There may be instances where the residents will have to wait for a short period of time to ensure the safety of both members of the public and operatives is maintained LBH aim to ensure that there are sufficient Traffic Marshals to communicate clearly and also direct vehicles safely through the works extents
New U9 Bus Route on Diversion:
It has been confirmed by TfL that the U9 Bus Route will run on Diversion during the Road Closure. The U9 will follow the normal Route when leaving Uxbridge but upon reaching Swakeleys Roundabout will follow the Signed Diversion Route along the A40, Denham Roundabout, A412, Moorfield Road and then Moorhall Road. The U9 will then turn left from Moorhall Road onto Harvil Road and resume the remainer of the normal scheduled Route. The U9 Buses heading from Harefield direction to Uxbridge will use the same Route as above (but the other way around).
Signed Diversion Route – The confirmed Diversion Route is via Moorhall Road, Moorfield Road, A412, Denham Roundabout, A40, Swakeleys Roundabout, Swakeleys Road

2            Breakspear Road South Traffic Management Setup – 28/07/25 to 31/12/26
From Mon 28/07/25 there will be an adjustment to the Traffic Management Setup between the Chiltern Line Bridge and HS2 Sites. The current 2-Way Traffic Light Setup had been in place since 2021 but changes to the HS2 Haul Road mean that the Traffic Management will be adjusted moving forward. An overview is below: Previously there were 2-Way Traffic Lights to allow traffic flow North & South on the main carriageway or traffic flow East to West across the HS2 Haul Road With the permanent Attenuation Pond being constructed where the Western entrance to the Haul Road Crossing was, this side of the Haul Road is now closed to traffic There remains a Traffic Head on the Eastern side of the Haul Road Crossing for HS2 traffic exiting from Site onto Breakspear Road South There will be an additional Traffic Head situated at the new Bellmouth Access on the southern carriageway near the new HS2 Overbridge
The new 3-Way Traffic Management Setup will run from 28/07/25 as follows:  Phase 1 = Traffic flowing North & South on the main carriageway on Breakspear Road South Phase 2 = HS2 Traffic exiting the Eastern side of the Haul Road Crossing from Site onto Breakspear Road South Phase 3 – HS2 Traffic exiting the new Bellmouth Access on the southern carriageway near the new HS2 Overbridge and onto Breakspear Road South   There will also be the Pedestrian Crossing points at the same locations as previous.
Closure of PROW U37 for Resurfacing Works – Mon 04/08 to Thur 28/08
HS2 and LBH have agreed that as one of the legacy improvements to Public Rights of Way (PROW) in the north of Hillingdon, HS2 will resurface the whole of the U37 PROW from the start of the PROW at Newyears Green Lane to the end of the extent of the PROW within the HS2 Northern Sustainable Placement (NSPA) Site.
The closure of U37 started from Mon 04/08 after LBH gave the go-ahead for the U36 to also reopen from 04/08 so walkers can use that route instead while the U37 is closed for resurfacing.
The U37 is expected to be closed until the end of August 2025 and there will be a Diversion in place for walkers to use the U36 instead.

3            River Pinn Conveyor Bridge Removal – Sat 16/08 at 10pm to Sun 17/08 at 5am (Rail Possession)
As part of the Demobilising of the Tunnelling Infrastructure and the removal of the overground Conveyor System that ran between West Ruislip Portal and the Treatment area off Harvil Road Gate 1 Site, HS2/SCS will shortly be removing the Conveyor Bridge that oversails the River Pinn.
These works will take place overnight as they must be done via Rail Possession (when the trains are not running on the Chiltern Line) for safety reasons.
The plan is the remove the Conveyor Bridge between 10pm on Sat 16/08 and 5am on Sun 17/08.
There will be Cranes in operation to lift and remove the Conveyor Bridge, but noise will be kept to a minimum, and HS2/SCS will ensure Site Lighting of the area is not directed at residential properties. The Map below shows the location of these works:

4            Construction of Flood Compensation Area next to Breakspear Road South – 25/07/25 to 31/03/26
HS2/SCS will be constructing the permanent Flood Compensation Area (FCA) in 2 fields on the eastern side of Breakspear Road South, either side of the current footpath diversion. There will also be installation of permanent fencing around the FCA and the U43 footpath. These works will include:  removal of the top layer of the soil construction of permanent drainage placement of subsoil and topsoil, which will be delivered to site by lorries seeding and landscaping installation of permanent fencing around the FCA and U43 footpath   These works will be carried out during Core Working Hours (Mon to Fri 8am to 6pm & Sat 8am to 1pm).
Please note that the removal of the wooden hoarding along the FCA and replacement with permanent CLD Fencing will take place between 04/08/25 and 28/11/25.
Access to the public footpath will always be maintained and traffic marshals will be stationed at crossing points to ensure safe access.

5            Breakspear Road South Road Closure – Fri 03/10 at 8pm until Sun 05/10 at 8pm
HS2/SCS have agreed with LBH that Breakspear Road South will be closed at the Chiltern Railway Bridge from Fri 03/10 at 8pm until Sun 05/10 at 8pm while the Conveyor Bridge that oversails the Highway is removed (Conveyor Bridge shown in the photo below).
The Conveyor Bridge carries the Conveyor system that was used to transport the TBM Spoil/Material over Breakspear Road South towards the Treatment Area at Harvil Road Gate 1. Now that both TBMs have completed their tunnelling between West Ruislip and Greenpark Way in LB Ealing the Conveyors are being removed and the Bridges that carry the Conveyor can also be removed.
These works will involve laying Matting on the road surface to protect it, then using a Crane to lower the Bridge to ground level before dismantling and removing it. The road would then be cleared with the Matting removed before reopening to the public.
These works had been scheduled for the last weekend of the school summer holidays in August but has been rescheduled at the request of HS2/SCS.
The Diversion Route has now been confirmed with HS2/SCS and is the usual Diversion via Swakeleys Road, Ickenham High Road, Bury Street, Breakspear Road

River Pinn: danger

We have it on good authority ( Thames and Affinity water knocking on doors in Bellamy close) that  a reason the River Pinn is dry in some places is because apparently a main sewer pipe has collapsed near Swakeleys Road so sewer water is going into the River Pinn. A tanker will be parked in Bellamy Close maybe for a couple of weeks near number 23 to help pump foul water away.
please warn dog owners and families with children children not to go near it.
